Sharks Are In!

Let’s face it – Sharks and shark charters are in – in our waters, and fun to catch, even while waiting for a giant bluefin.

Makos, porbeagles, threshers and blue sharks are in our area and biting, making for some fun toothy action.  Like seeing this mouthful right next to the boat.

Meanwhile we are also tagging and releasing giant bluefin – 500lbs yesterday, 800lbs last week.  We use tags from the Large Pelagic Research Center, our best source of bluefin tuna research.  Learn more about their tagging program here.

This shared charter aboard Tuna Hunter Fishing Charters in June landed the 1st Bluefin tuna in Gloucester for the 2017 season.

Congratulations to Mindy and Doarsha, as they joined up on a shared charter to battle this guy to the boat.   This giant Bluefin opens the season – and many more big fish and great angling battles to come.  Bluefin are feeding on bunker and mackerel, fattening up for future charters.

While they are all avid Wicked Tuna fans, they will agree that nothing compares to being there in person to hear the reel scream, feel the power of the fish through the rod, battle fist to reel to angle the fish in crank by crank, see the harpoon shot, and finally pull your bluefin through the fish door.

Bluefin Tuna Madness is On! Fat Boy by Jeff and Jack

If you have not heard, October Bluefin Madness has struck – bluefin tuna arrived off Gloucester in numbers not seen in years, following awesome schools of herring like we have not seen in years.

Of course Tuna Hunter was there, as Captain Gary is “tuna hunter” in every sense of the word. Tuna Hunter will be Bluefin Tuna Fishing every day, weather permitting, through November.

Lucky Charmers Strike Again – 830lb Gloucester Bluefin Tuna on Tuna Hunter

Martha’s Lucky Charmers proved lucky indeed, as they landed this amazing 117 inch giant bluefin aboard Tuna Hunter Fishing Charters last weekend.

 Kudos to all anglers – Martha, Patty, Al and Charlie, who expertly handled this long bluefin tuna throughout the 4 hour battle.  Al and Charlie had particularly long circling session with our girl, as she was having nothing to do with either of them, nor with mate “Lars-ceny” standing ready with the harpoon.  So close … yet so far, she’d come close and eyeball us, then flick her tail and be off. (That’s the 2nd harpoon in the foreground – the first was ready in hand.)

The best news is, Martha brings us another lucky crew for the Gloucester Bluefin Blowout Tournament coming up August 1st – August 3rd.  Odds are with Martha on board we’ll break the shutout.  Good luck to all.
